Celtic Technologies Ltd is proud to announce their 20th year of operation delivering cost-effective remediation solutions. The company was incorporated by the Directors at the time, Barry Ellis and John Rees, on 27th March 1992 in Cardiff and three members of staff. Today, the number of staff has increased to over 50 specialist professionals operating across the UK from four regional offices in Reading, Cardiff, Warrington and Birmingham.
Celtic has dealt with over a 1000 contaminated sites in the UK in a wide range of commercial sectors such as house builders, utility companies, petro-chemicals, land asset managers, and local councils. Over the years, Celtic has continued to be a UK leader with some of the first ever UK applications of air sparging, multiphase extraction (MPE) groundwater treatment, stabilisation, catalytic oxidation and biotreatment and was the first company in the UK to hold a Mobile Treatment Licence.
Celtic has always been active in development and innovation of ground and groundwater remediation technologies and their application and this has included funding and support of two Doctorate research programmes (at Birmingham University and Cardiff University). Celtic has won 3 SMART Awards for internal research and development, and undertaken joint technology development programmes with other Universities in the USA (Utah) and South Wales (Glamorgan).
Remediation projects have ranged from one of the first remediation contracts in 1992, a heating oil spill, to multi-million pound projects such as preparing the land for the Mersey Gateway Project, one of the top 100 infrastructure projects worldwide; and Coed Darcy, where a new Urban Village on the site of a former oil refinery is one of the most ambitious regeneration projects in the UK. Customers include petrochemical companies such as BP and Shell; utility companies including National Grid and Wales and West; contractors such as BAM Nuttall and McLaren; developers St Modwen and Peel; and many environmental consultants.
In March 2008, Celtic were acquired by EnGlobe Corp., a leading international integrated environmental services company specialising in the management of organic based waste streams and contaminated soils.
Over the years Celtic has won many awards for outstanding achievements in their field including Brownfield Briefing Awards 2011 – Winner: Most Sustainable and Low Carbon Remediation Project. National Grid Property Holdings Awards 2011 – Winner: Most Considerate Project (in partnership with JBP Ltd). National Ground Engineering Awards 2011 – Winner: Sustainability. This year Celtic was very pleased to be appointed a Contractor on the Environment Agency National Contaminated Land Remediation Framework.
There is very much a team atmosphere within the Celtic workforce and they have enjoyed involvement in numerous charitable events such as the Welsh Three Peaks, UK Three Peaks in 24 hours and have sponsored children in Africa. Four marriages have even resulted through staff meeting at Celtic !
At the anniversary party on 9 November which included many former staff members now working for Regulators, competitors plus companies still forming part of the Celtic Supply Chain, Barry Ellis, one of the original Directors who is very much still involved as International Business Development Director commented, “Twenty years on, I am very proud to be part of a successful and resourceful company. With such a great team we will continue grow and pioneer new methods of remediation and provide cost-effective solutions for our customers”.
